Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Nantes

  • The IES program in Nantes is located in the historical capital of Brittany, the sixth largest city in France with a population of over 500,000. Rich in tradition, yet unspoiled by tourism, Nantes offers students the opportunity to live and study in an authentically French atmosphere. Only two hours by train from Paris, the location allows easy access to the capital as well as to Breton villages and towns of the Atlantic coast.
  • The program has two important goals: to improve students' written and oral proficiency in French through language and area studies courses and internships, and to introduce students to contemporary France and its role in the European Union. All courses are taught in French by native French faculty, many of whom are full professors at the Université de Nantes. Through a combination of courses taught by both IES and the university, students study grammar, conversation, and phonetics as well as area studies courses in Art History, Economics, History, Literature, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Theatre.
  • Internship opportunities include teaching in French collèges (junior high schools) and lycées (high schools) and options in local banks, not-for-profit associations, multinational corporations and regional government organization. Volunteer work is available in charitable associations and groups that arrange tutoring for children. Field trips are organized to such locations as Mont Saint-Michel, Saint Malo, and the Chateaux of the Loire Valley. A one-week optional field trip is available to destinations in Provence such as Le Pont du Gard (a Roman aqueduct), and the Roman amphitheaters in Arles and Nimes.
  • Housing is provided in homestays with carefully selected families.
  • Eligibility: Fifth semester level in French.
