Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Rome

  • The IES Rome Program is designed primarily for students interested in studying social sciences, humanities, or fine arts in the historic capital of Italy.
  • Sharing facilities with a private Italian university, the program offers courses in English for students with little or no background in Italian language or coursework taught entirely in Italian, including the possibility of study at an Italian university, for high-intermediate and advanced-level students. The possibility of attending the Rome University of Fine Arts is open to studio art students with at least two semesters of Italian and an acceptable portfolio of artwork. All students on the program are required to take an intensive four-credit course in Italian at the appropriate level, and most then select an additional four three-credit options from a wide range of English-taught courses in anthropology, art history, classics, economics, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, and urban studies.
  • Closely supervised internships are offered for students with at least two semesters of Italian in art institutions, non-governmental organizations, advocacy groups, and tourism.
  • Volunteer opportunities are also available. Several field trips are conducted to other parts of Italy such as Pompeii, Sicily, Tuscany, and Ravenna. Political science students may have the opportunity to participate in the Model European Union simulation, which takes place every semester at a different IES Center in Europe, such as Berlin, Paris, or Madrid.
  • Housing is available in apartments, some together with local Italian students, and, to a more limited extent, with families.
  • Eligibility: Course background in such subject areas as humanities, ancient, medieval, and/or renaissance history, art history, religion, modern European history or political science strongly recommended. ALSO program Italian recommended.
