AMIDEAST in Cairo, Egypt

 

  • The AMIDEAST program in Cairo, Egypt, located in Dokki, on the west bank of the Nile, offers the study of modern Egyptian culture, taught in English, together with Arabic language instruction.
  • Students in the Modern Middle East/North African (MENA) Studies Program carry 16 credit-hours per semester. All students enroll in Modern Standard Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, "Contemporary Issues in Egypt and the Arab World," and two electives from offerings in Modern MENA Studies in a variety of disciplines. Modern Standard Arabic is offered at the advanced beginning, intermediate, or advanced level. Egyptian Arabic instruction begins during on-site orientation and continues throughout the semester. For language instruction, AMIDEAST partners with the Arab Academy, one of the most successful Arabic Language immersion programs in the Middle East, serving individuals and institutions from the U.S., Europe, Af rica, and Asia.
  • It also hosts students from African countries sponsored by the Islamic Development Bank in Je ddah, Saudi Arabia. Elective courses include: The City of Cairo, Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, Introduction to Ancient Egypt, International Relations in the Middle East and North Africa, Modern Arab Literature, Women and Gender in Islam. Special activities include contacts with local NGOS for non-credit service-learning projects and internships.
  • Excursions include: Pyramids, Upper Egypt, and Alexandria.
  • Housing is provided in shared apartments in neighboring districts of Cairo.
  • Eligibility: At least one semester of Arabic. Course relevant to the region recommended.
