The AMIDEAST program in Kuwait features the study of Modern Standard as well as Kuwaiti Arabic, and students select three other courses from offerings in Gulf Studies in a variety of disciplines to complete a 16-credit semester. Modern Standard Arabic is offered at the advanced-beginning, intermediate, or advanced level, and Kuwaiti Arabic instruction begins during on-site orientation and continues throughout the semester. For both language instruction and other courses, AMIDEAST partners with the American University of Kuwait (AUK), an English-language medium institution with a liberal arts curriculum. In addition to Arabic language, students may choose three courses from the following electives in Gulf Studies: Human Development in the Arab World, Survey of Arab-Islamic Civilization, Arab and Islamic Art, History of the Islamic World: 622-1800, Modern History of Kuwait and the Gulf, Music of the Arabian Peninsula, Internat ional Relations of Arab States, Arab Politics, Fundamentals of Arab Society, Arab Society and Culture. AUK courses options include, depending on the semester: Literature of the Arabian Gulf, Arab Women in History, Modern Arabic Literature, Arab Women and Literature, Media Arabic, Arab Identity and Thought, Arab History in the Late Ottoman Period, Twentieth Century Middle East History, US Foreign Policy in the Middle East, Islamic Militant Movements, Government and Politics of Kuwait, Islamic Political Philosophy, Islamic Studies. Special activities include contact with local NGOS for non-credit service-learning projects and internships. Excursions include travel to one other country in the Gulf region. Students have a choice of living arrangements and meal plans, including living with a Kuwaiti family and a shared apartment.
Eligibility: At least one semester of Arabic. Course relevant to the region recommended.
