Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM): Semester in the Arts in Chicago

  • Arts program in Chicago is open to students from all majors with an interest in any arts discipline who are ready to engage Chicago's art world while expanding their own notions of creativity in the performance arts, literature, journalism, visual arts, new media, audio, commercial art, and communication.
  • The program features four academic components: the Core Course, Seminar, Internship and Independent Study Project.
  • The Core Course introduces students to Chicago and focuses on giving a comprehensive view of the city, examining how art, business, and politics intertwine while exploring how race, class, and ethnicity affect culture and commerce. A series of guest lectures provides the opportunity to interact with people actively engaged in the areas being studied. The course combines classroom study of the arts in Chicago with field experience of such events as plays, concerts, poetry readings and cinema. Most importantly, the Core Course gets students into the city to meet people who are working in the arts, solving problems, and transacting business.
  • The Seminar involves extensive reading and writing on an arts topic of individual interest.
  • Internships have been offered in over 350 areas, including marketing design, entertainment, theatre management, music promotion, art galleries, museums, and arts education.
  • The Independent Study Project may be linked to the student's Internship or may involve working with master artists or participating in art classes offered throughout the city.
  • Numerous field trips are included in the program.
  • Accommodation is in shared apartments.
  • Eligibility: Open to students with strong interest in the arts.
