COSTA RICA: Latin American Culture & Society (Fall)

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest Latin American Culture and Society program is located in San Jose in its own center equipped with classrooms, library, and computer facilities near the University of Costa Rica. The program offers in-depth cultural studies strengthened by immersion in the daily life of the country through a combination of coursework and field study. The academic program has three major components including intensive Spanish language study during the first five weeks of the program; an Introduction to Costa Rica, providing an overview of the country through classwork, field studies and a two week rural stay; and a choice of core courses, taught by local experts dealing with issues in economics, politics, and development issues. The core course incorporates a major independent study project in the social sciences or humanities on a topic of personal interest relating to areas covered in class and may be written in English. During the second half of the program, students continue to develop their abilities in Spanish by selecting a language elective in Latin American Literature, Advanced Composition or Advanced Conversation. Throughout the semester, the academic program is complemented by field trips allowing students to explore the diverse human and physical geography of the country. Housing is provided in homestays with Costa Rican families. Eligibility: At least three semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent. Preference given to students four semesters.
