COSTA RICA: Semester Internship and Research Program
The Institute for Central American Development Studies (ICADS), a center for social and environmental research in Central America, focuses on women's issues, economic development, public health, education, human rights, and environmental issues. The stated aim of the institute is to foster an increased understanding of the region and to stimulate critical evaluation of current development strategies, especially as they impact women, the poor, and the environment. The Semester Internship and Research Program offers an initial four weeks of intensive Spanish language training and specialized seminars in history and culture, environmental problems, and women's studies followed by an eight-week supervised internship in Costa Rica, Nicaragua or Belize. Students may choose a research internship on a subject of interest to them or work on subjects of a more applied nature with trained professionals, e.g., environmental attorneys, public health professionals, teachers, and community organizers. One student is placed
at each internship site in the interest of language learning and maximizing immersion in the local culture. Housing is in homestays. The program concludes with a four-day study-tour to either Nicaragua or Panama. Eligibility: Minimum of three semesters of college-level Spanish; two years strongly recommended. Preference given to students with demonstrated interest in community service activities.
