ATLANTA: Spelman College

Spelman College is a privately endowed, four-year liberal arts college for women, founded in 1881. An historically black women's college, Spelman is one of the most prominent institutions of higher education in the country. The college provides students with an academic climate conducive to the full development of academic and leadership potential, endeavoring to strengthen those qualities that enable women to be self-confident as well as spiritually and culturally enriched. Spelman attempts to instill in students as appreciation for the multi-cultural communities of the world in which they live and a sense of responsibility for bringing about positive change in those communities. The college's well-designed 32-acre campus is located just west of downtown Atlanta and has an enrollment of 1800 women. The academic program includes 23 major areas of study and encourages students to pursue a broad program of study in languages, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, fine arts and the humanities. A low student-faculty ratio of 15:1 insures small classes and personal attention. The college offers an extensive array of co-curricular activities involving interaction with politicians, artists and business executives as well as a full range of extra-curricular opportunities. Housing is in dormitories. Students from other colleges who wish to attend Spelman may be admitted as Guest Applicants. Eligibility: Minimum GPA of 2.50.
