INDIA: South India Term Abroad Program (SITA)
Sponsored by a small consortium of liberal arts colleges, including Grinnell, the SITA program operates in the temple city of Madurai in the southernmost Indian state of Tamil Nadu, one of
India's most important centers of religious pilgrimage. Classes are taught at the centrally located SITA Center by local Indian faculty. Coursework includes required courses in Tamil language and culture, socio-political issues, and a month-long independent study project on a topic of personal interest. Optional courses include the Myth and Art of Hinduism and Modern Indian Literature. Scheduled cultural activities emphasize music, dance, and drama, as well as numerous field trips to neighboring states, towns, and villages, including a fifteen-day tour to the neighboring states of Karnataka and Kerala. Intensive, in-depth contact with South India's
people and cultures is a hallmark of the program. All students are housed with host families throughout the program and become part of the family, taking part in their religious rituals and social activities. Eligibility: GPA above 3.0, potential to
adjust to and benefit from radically different socio-cultural environment. Coursework in Asian Studies and Global Development Studies highly recommended.
