Sponsored by a small consortium of liberal arts colleges, including Grinnell, the ISLE program, operating on the tropical Asian island nation of Sri Lanka located just off the southern tip of India, is located in the city of Kandy, the center of traditional Sri Lankan culture. The program is affilated with the University of Peradeniya, a leading institution of higher education where local faculty organize a range of courses tailored to participants. Required courses include intensive Sinhala, the local language, a Sri Lankan Studies Seminar, and the Independent Study, an in-depth field project chosen by the student. Optional courses include Buddhist Thought, Ritual and Folk Culture, Modern Lankan Literature, Art, and Theatre, and other offerings in women's studies, political science, history, anthropology, and development studies. Classroom study in supplemented by field trips and two tours of the island, one involving field study of archaeological and religious sites and the other featuring trips to wildlife sanctuaries, sites of pilgrimmage, and tea plantations. Housing is provided in homestays, where each student becomes an active member of a local family for the duration of the program. Eligibility: GPA above 3.0, potential to adjust to and benefit from a radically different socio-cultural environment. Coursework in Asian Studies and Global Development Studies highly recommended.
