Faculty data in this report come from Dean's office records. Staff counts and definitions come from Grinnell's IPEDS Fall Staff reports, which come from the Office of Human Resources records. Student counts come from the Registrar's office.

The ethnicity categories used by the college are those that we are required to use to report to the federal government. Although a different set of categories was used on the 2000 US Census, no new categories have yet been implemented for educational institutions. The categories currently in use are:

  • Nonresident alien
  • Black, non-Hispanic
  • American Indian/Alaska Native
  • Asian/Pacific Islander
  • White, non-Hispanic
  • Race/ethnicity unknown

Federal reporting guidelines require that each individual be counted once, and only once, within the above categories. Individual Grinnell employees and students make their own decisions about whether to report an ethnic identity to the college, and if so which category to report.

Faculty

Faculty members are reported here in seven categories:

  • Tenured full professors
  • Tenured associate professors
  • Tenure-track assistant professors and instructors
  • Full-time non-tenure-track (library and physical education)
  • Continuing part-time (writing/reading/science/math labs, chaplains, a few others)
  • Temporary full-time (mostly leave replacements)
  • Temporary part-time (most lecturers, Mellon post-docs, CSMP, MSIR, a few others)

The counts below include faculty members in administrative positions and those currently on leave, and count both members of shared contracts separately. This is a head count, not a count of teaching strength.
