Atul Gupta graduated from Grinnell College in 1988 with a double major in Physics and Economics and a concentration in Computer Science. As a student, he was active in the International Student Organization, serving as its president in his second year, and also served as a Student Advisor and Resident Hall Assistant.
Atul started his career as a Research Analyst on a two-person team responsible for identifying technology options that would help Principal Financial Group, a $360 billion global financial services firm, gain a competitive advantage. He became the Director of International Systems and was responsible for all overseas Information Technology operations of PFG, consisting of multiple companies located in 9 countries.
In 1991, he founded Advanced Technologies Group, Inc. to continue his interest in researching technology and identifying innovative ways to help organizations benefit from it. ATG was ranked among the 500 fastest growing private US companies by Inc. 500 in 2001, 2002 and 2003.. For the last few years, ATG has focused exclusively on developing and implementing solutions that dramatically improve the effectiveness of large judicial agencies such as U.S. Departments of Justice and State Correctional agencies. ATG systems, considered the gold-standard for managing operations of such agencies, are designed to manage the entire continuum of correctional services and provide very significant efficiency gains.
Atul was a founding member of the Technology Association of Iowa and focused his energies on creating opportunities to enable Iowa companies to better network with each other. He has served as a board member of ISU’s Iowa Value Fund, which provides funding to projects that create innovative technology and generate high-tech jobs in Iowa. In 2009, he was the recipient of Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Atul is married to Sherry Davis Gupta ’88, and they have three children: Yash, Shabana, and Nitin. Originally from India, Atul applied to Grinnell College after reading about its philosophy to enable students to follow their interests. He selected Grinnell College because the College’s responses to questions during the application process exemplified the thoughtfulness and dedication of Grinnell faculty and staff to ensure student success.
