Dr. Coleman received a B.A. in chemistry with honors from Grinnell in 1965. She received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Coleman is the President of the University of Michigan, after serving as the President of the University of Iowa. Before that, she served as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico. She has also been Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research and Dean of Research at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Coleman was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (1998) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2001). She was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2000. She has an honorary degree from Luther College and serves on a number of higher education and corporate boards.
