Lonabelle Kaplan “Kappie” Spencer ’47 1993; LIfe Trustee 2005
A 1947 graduate of Grinnell with a B.A. in physical education, Ms. Spencer has received recognition as a volunteer, a women’s activist, and an advocate for the public interest. She now lives in Florida and serves as public policy consultant. She is the founder and Project Director of the National Gender Balance Project and has helped various states pass gender-balance legislation for state boards, committees, commissions, and councils. In 1990, she received the Christine Wilson Medal for Equality and Justice, an award honoring Iowans who have given outstanding service in these areas. She is a member of the American Association of University Women and has served on its state and national boards of directors. She is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women. At Grinnell she was a class fund director from 1973 to 2001, and has endowed a scholarship to encourage women and minority students to enter the fields of math and science. She received a Grinnell Alumni Award in 1983.
