BIO-150-03 "Introduction to Biological Inquiry: Biological Responses to Stress"
In this course, we will investigate ways that biologists seek to understand how
organisms can interact with their environment and change in response to varying
environmental conditions. Since microbes are excellent model systems for biological
inquiry, their response to stressful environments will be emphasized. Students will
formulate hypotheses regarding stress responses, design and conduct experiments
to test their hypotheses, and communicate the results of their experiments. The class
will have three, two-hour meetings per week that combine lab, lecture, and discussion.
Prerequisites: none. 4 credits.

56987ENG-295-02 "Special Topic: Grinnell Writers' Conference Advanced Fiction Writing
Seminar." F 2:15 - 4:05, September 12 - October 17, Mears 115, Grinnellians will
be able to take a special 2 credit special topic writing workshop taught by Elizabeth
McCracken [Here's Your Hat, What's Your Hurry (stories), The Giant's House and
Niagra Falls All Over Again (novels)] and Edward Carey (Observatory Mansions),
a couple who are both among the visiting faculty at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
The Writers' Workshop-the first graduate program in the country dedicated to
creative writing-has long been known as the premiere program of its kind in the
country and the world, and being able to participate in this series of intensive
workshops with faculty from the Workshop is a signal opportunity for Grinnell's
community of writers. The visiting Writers will teach poetry and fiction courses
during alternating semesters. This class will meet on Fridays for six weeks and
will involve close reading and criticism of student work. Prerequisites: English 205 or
206 and have several completed short stories in hand or anticipate writing several
during the six-week duration of the course. Short course deadlines apply.
