Threat Levels:
Whenever the US. Government issues a homeland Security Department Threat
response level Officers of the Grinnell College Safety and Security Department
shall be aware of the threat level. There are five threat conditions, each identified
by a description and corresponding color, which has been developed by the
Federal Government to illustrate the relative threats conditions. The higher the
threat level condition, the greater the risk of a terrorist attacks. Risk includes both
the probability of an attack occurring and its potential gravity. The United States
Attorney General in consultation with the Homeland Security Department assigns
national threat conditions for Homeland Security.
- This is the highest threat level. A terrorist attack has occurred or credible and corroborated intelligence indicates that one is imminent.
- Alll persons should be prepared to take emergency precautions and avoid high threat areas.
- Be suspicious of persons taking photographs of critical facilities, asking detailed questions about physical security or dressed inappropriately for weather or they appear to be concealing objects.
- Report suspicious activity to the Safety and Security Department.
- Closely monitor news reports and emergency alert systems radio and T.V. stations.
- This is the second highest threat level, indicating a high risk. Intelligence indicates that there is a high risk of a terrorist attack but a specific target has not been identified.
- Expect some delays, such as restrictions of heightened security at public buildings and facilities throughout the community.
- Avoid leaving unattended packages or briefcases in public areas.
- If a suspicious package is found in a building or parking lot do not touch or try to remove the package but notify the College Safety and Security Department.
- This is Mild-level of threat assessment, it indicates there is an elevated risk of a terrorist attack but a specific region or target has not been identified.
- Continue normal activities, but report suspicious activities to the College Safety & Security Department.
- Consider contacting your building Campus Alert Monitor to know the best route for evacuation from your building if necessary.
- This level represents a guarded threat level-general risk with no credible threats to specific targets.
- All persons should take medical preparations, such as updating immunizations, assembling first aid supplies and asking your doctor for emergency prescription medicines.
- Review family emergency plans and arrange alternative communications methods.
- Be aware of potential high risk targets in your community.
- This threat level indicates a generally low risk of terrorism. Security is implemented to preclude routine criminal threats.
- Develop a family plan- have a plan for each family to leave home, work or school and take protective measures if necessary.
- Review evacuation plans with your family for home and contact your office building Campus Alert Monitor concerning evacuation concerns for your area.
