Every year, Grinnell College sponsors one graduate to work for a year in the town of Grinnell at a human service or development agency as a part of the Grinnell Corps. Agencies apply to host two consecutive one-year Fellows. After these two years, the Fellowship moves to another agency in town. In partnership with the Imagine Grinnell Foundation, Grinnell College selected one member from the Classes of 2001 and 2002 to work for one year as the Director of the new youth center in Grinnell, The Galaxy. In this program, the Fellow was responsible for the administration of the Youth Center, directing its operation, and executing the policies of the Youth Council and Adult Board to further the Youth Center's goals and objectives. For the classes of 2003 and 2004, the Grinnell Corps placed Fellows with the Domestic Violence Alternatives/Sexual Assault Center as a Victim Advocate and Community Educator. The Fellow selected for this position had the opportunity to work directly in all aspects of DVA/SAC's work in
the community and learned first hand about program development, community activism, community education, and crisis intervention. Members of the classes of 2005 and 2006 had the opportunity to work with Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) in their efforts to alleviate poverty in Poweshiek County. For the classes of 2007 and 2008, the Fellowship has been hosted by the Grinnell-Newburg School District, focusing on issues of early childhood education and dropout prevention.
The host site for 2009-11 will be selected in the fall of 2008; check back later in the fall semester when this announcement has been made for more program details.
