In addition to its regularly-scheduled activities, the Office of Service and Social Commitment
runs two annual programs:
- The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility, administered in collaboration with the Peace Studies Program, challenges graduating seniors to pledge to "explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider, and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work." Pledge-taking graduates wear a green ribbon on their commencement gown to indicate participation. In recent years, an average of 75% of Grinnell graduates have annually taken the pledge.
- The Voluntary Service Send-Off Reception, held on Sunday afternoon of Commencement weekend, recognizes and honors those members of the graduating class who are entering full-time service work after graduation, such as Peace Corps, Americorps, Grinnell Corps, and Teach For America. Honorees are given journals from the college in which they can reflect and capture this meaningful and important time in their lives.
