Funding for up to three summer internships are awarded annually by the Office of
Social Commitment. Students are responsible for identifying their own summer
internship sites, and placement should be at a site which will help the student use his or
her talents to benefit others. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue internships
which will provide new and different experiences otherwise inaccessible to them in
settings unfamiliar to them. Interns should have a goal of discerning, through their internship,
what kind of service work they would like to do after graduation.
In 2002-03, grants of up to $2400 for an 8-week, non-credit-bearing internship will be
awarded. Funds may be used for transportation and living expenses. Students who
have been accepted to the Social Commitment Preparatory Program (SCPP) are particularly
encouraged to apply for these grants.
Grants will be made based on four criteria - the substance of the written proposal,
evidence of sound preparation for the internship experience, potential impact of the
internship on the student's future plans, and general academic performance.
Following the submission of applications, applicants may be requested to interview
with the Social Commitment Internship Committee. All other factors being equal, members
of the SCPP are given preference in internship selection.
Internship selection and administration is run in conjunction with the Career Development
Office internship program. Please see the CDO's webpage on summer internships for
more information, deadlines, and an application.
