WHEREAS, many Grinnell College students and alumni have followed Horace Greeley's
advice to J.B. Grinnell and have "gone west," and have taken Grinnell's deep commitment
to community service with them; and
WHEREAS, Grinnell alumni have nourished Seattle's soul by leading key community organizations such
as A Contemporary Theatre, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the National Lawyers
Guild, and the Student Conservation Association; and
WHEREAS, two of the city's departmental leaders, Seattle City Light Superintendant Gary
Zarker and Department of Neighborhoods Director Jim Diers, are Grinnell alumni; and
WHEREAS, Grinnell students have demonstrated their commitment to social justice by
coming to Seattle last November to peacefully protest policies of the World Trade
Organization; and
WHEREAS, five students are in Seattle this summer as participants in Grinnell's first Alternative
Summer program of community service; and
WHEREAS, these student volunteers -- Meghan Hayes, Uriah Melchizedek, Bridie Roberts,
Sharon Routh, and Anna Thelan -- are empowering Seattle's struggling communities by
helping them to build community gardens, manage a farmer's market, implement neighborhood
plans, and operate a day workers center; and
WHEREAS, Grinnell alumni are gathering in Seattle on July 15 to learn about the work of
these students and recognize the alumni recipients of the Joseph F. Wall Service Award;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAUL SCHELL, Mayor of the City of Seattle and product of Iowa,
do hereby proclaim Saturday, July 15, 2000 to be
in Seattle, and encourage all citizens to celebrate this institution for its ongoing contributions
to our community.
