Cultural Film: My Left Foot
Directed by Jim Sheridan, 1989. Ireland/Great Britain, English. Color, 103 min.
My Left Foot is the true-life story of Christy Brown, who led a full life as a painter and author despite developing cerebral palsy and growing up in abject poverty in 1930's Dublin. Brown was nearly incapacitated by his disease, but he learned to use his left foot to navigate daily life and more. Although of the "triumph-over-adversity" genre, this film gives an honest portrayal of both the realities of Brown's life and this complex m an. Both Daniel Day Lewis as Christy Brown and Brenda Fricker as his mother won Oscars for their performances.
