OFF-CAMPUS STUDY
Each year, large numbers of Grinnell students, representing 50-60% of every graduating class, are accepted into a wide range of off-campus study programs both abroad and in the United States. In addition to the approximately 70 program options in more than 30 countries operated by partner institutions, the College has two off-campus study programs of its own, Grinnell-in-London and Grinnell-in-Washington D.C. Participation is open to all qualified students, regardless of major, and possibilities exist in virtually all subject areas.
Off-Campus Study (OCS) is an opportunity for students to broaden their liberal education and enhance their major, concentration, or other area of academic interest. Although Grinnell recognizes that just being and studying in a new and challenging environment is a valuable learning experience, the College believes the opportunity will be even more enriching if closely integrated with coursework. During the application process to study off campus, great emphasis is placed on selecting an appropriate program compatible with the student's academic goals. Students work together with their academic advisers and the OCS Office to choose a program that supplements and enhances their Grinnell education.
The OCS Office website provides detailed descriptions of individual programs and applications. Students should carefully consult the Off-Campus Study Handbook for all procedures and regulations. Applications for off-campus study are due in the middle of December in the academic year prior to when the student wants to study off campus.
PHI
BETA KAPPA (HONOR SOCIETY)
Phi Beta Kappa (PBK), the nation's oldest and largest academic honor
society, fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.
PBK has a local chapter at Grinnell College called Beta of Iowa. Each
spring semester the local chapter selects high achieving junior and senior
students and invites them to become members. These students not only
have a very high GPA, but they have had a broad program of study from
each of the three divisions of the College that specifically includes foreign
language, mathematics and lab science. To be eligible for consideration,
students should carefully follow the requirements found in the
Academic
Catalog.
