The 2012 Grinnell Prize Symposium was held on the Grinnell College campus November 12-16, 2012. The 2012 winners, Cristi Hegranes, founder and executive director of Global Press Institute; Jacob Wood, co-founder and president, and William McNulty, co-founder and vice president of Team Rubicon (shared award); and Jane Chen, CEO of Embrace Innovations and co-founder of Embrace and Embrace Innovations, and Linus Liang, COO of Embrace and co-founder of Embrace and Embrace Innovations (shared award) shared their experiences and perspectives in shaping innovative programs that effect positive social change.

Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, was the keynote speaker on Nov. 14. Before age 30, Greenfield and business partner Ben Cohen opened an ice cream shop in Burlington, Vt., that has since spawned a global brand. Though known for its ice cream, Ben & Jerry's also has a strong commitment to "a sustainable corporate concept of linked prosperity." Greenfield and Cohen are devoted not only to product and economic missions, but also to a progressive, nonpartisan social mission that "seeks to meet human needs and eliminate injustices" in their local, national and international communities by integrating the social concerns of their mission into day-to-day business activities.

Jacob Wood and William McNulty of Team Rubicon were not on campus for the Nov. 12-16 Symposium, as their organization mobilized its largest-ever relief effort, assisting with the Hurricane Sandy recovery in New York and New Jersey. Wood and McNulty will receive their prize, and meet with the campus community to discuss their work, early in the spring semester.
