Urgent Care

If you believe that you are experiencing a health or mental health emergency, call 911 or Campus Safety and Security at x4600 (641/269-4600 off campus).

We hope that, whenever possible, you will contact Student Health and Counseling Services (SHACS) before your situation becomes urgent:  when you first start to notice that you feel uncomfortable or seem to be developing symptoms.

However, we know that there may be times when your distress or symptoms develop suddenly or worsen swiftly.  SHACS offers scheduled and unscheduled urgent care services.

If your symptoms or feelings do not feel like an emergency to you but do feel urgent, call SHACS (during business hours) or the RLC on call (after hours:  x4600 or 641/269-4600 off campus).

If it is during business hours, tell the receptionist that you have an urgent concern.  You will speak with a nurse or counselor, as appropriate, who will ask you about your symptoms and situation and make treatment recommendations.  We may:  have you come to SHACS immediately;  schedule you for an appointment during our urgent care hours or at another time;  and/or refer you to services off campus.  If we refer you to an off-campus care provider, we will help you arrange a timely appointment and transportation.

When SHACS is not open, the RLC on call will help you access appropriate care.  This may include a phone consultation with our after-hours nursing service or our after-hours counseling service.
