Psychiatric Services
Student Health and Counseling Services (SHACS) contracts with the Mental Health Clinic of Tama County to offer psychiatric services on campus. We are happy to announce that our psychiatric hours are expanded this year. Dr. Laura Van Cleve comes to SHACS for partial days on Tuesdays and the second and fourth Fridays of the month. At SHACS, Dr. Van Cleve primarily sees students for medication management appointments; she also can usually see one student per week for a psychiatric evaluation.
We are very pleased to be able to offer you the convenience of seeing Dr. Van Cleve on campus. Because her hours here are so limited, if you wish to see Dr. Van Cleve at SHACS:
- you may have to rearrange your schedule (i.e., miss part or all of a class, meeting, or other activity) for the appointment
- we will send you email reminders soon after you make the appointment and the day before the appointment
- you must let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you will not be able to keep the appointment
(Dr. Van Cleve's hours at SHACS are both expensive and in high demand. If you can not keep an appointment with her here, we need to be able to offer that time to another student.)
- if you fail to let us know in advance that you will miss a psychiatric appointment at SHACS, you will be charged a "no-show" fee: $50 for a medication management appointment, $200 for a psychiatric evaluation
Dr. Van Cleve also has an office in downtown Grinnell and you are welcome to see her there. Many students have their initial psychiatric evaluation appointments at Dr. Van Cleve's downtown office, then come to SHACS for their follow-up medication management appointments. If you see Dr. Van Cleve at her downtown office, you will need to cover the cost through your health insurance and/or out of pocket. You can schedule appointments to see Dr. Van Cleve downtown by calling the Mental Health Clinic of Tama County at 641/484-5234.
