Off-Campus Non-College-Owned Housing

Students may only live off-campus if granted permission by Student Affairs. Automatic permission to live in non-college-owned housing is granted to the following students provided that they notify Student Affairs by the sign up deadline and submit appropriate documentation:

  • Students whose children live with them.
  • Students living with parents in the Grinnell area.
  • Students who are 22 years of age by 09-01-10.

Third and fourth-year students may request permission from Student Affairs to live off-campus. Students requesting permission to live off-campus must sign up to request off-campus housing in the Student Affairs office by the designated deadline. Student Affairs will determine the number of students who may live off-campus each year. Students requesting permission to live off-campus are sorted by their class status and newly assigned room draw number. Off-campus housing offers are sent to students via email. Students ARE NOT APPROVED to live off-campus UNTIL an offer is sent from Student Affairs.

Students who sign up by the deadline but are not offered off-campus housing are automatically placed on a waitlist. As additional off-campus spaces are approved by Student Affairs, offers will be sent to students on the waitlist.

Students who miss the sign-up deadline will be placed on a late sign-up waitlist and offered off-campus permission if and when available. Students on the late waitlist are placed at the end of the waitlist, after students who signed up prior to the deadline, regardless of class status.

First-semester juniors (as of spring semester) will not be allowed to live off-campus.

Students must request permission each academic year to live off-campus as permission is granted on a yearly basis. Students who have received permission previously must reapply in subsequent years.
