Established in 1986, The Faculty Mentoring Program (FMP) was designed to encourage African-American students to form closer relationships with faculty members. Past research consistently showed that African-American students were less likely than their Caucasian counterparts to have developed deep and meaningful relationships with faculty members.
In 1993, the program was expanded beyond servicing only African-American students. As one could imagine, the research regarding African-American students and faculty relationships held true for all four of the United States' traditionally recognized under-represented racial groups: African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latin American.
With Grinnell College's diverse student population, the program now serves students from all four of these racial groups.
Faculty mentors are matched with a first year student and serve as the student's mentor for one academic year. The mentor's role is twofold: (1) to act as a resource person, (2) to introduce the student to other faculty/staff who may be of assistance to the student's personal and academic growth.
