Name: David Achio
The place(s) I call 'home': San Jose, Costa Rica
Class year : 2013
Major/Intended Major: Biology
Why I chose Grinnell: After high school I took a gap year because I was not sure of what I wanted in my life, did I want to study at an American university? or stay home with my friends? or travel the world with no money in my pockets? I decided to challenge myself academically and at the same time see more of the world. I wanted to find a college that would offer a diverse student body and a welcoming environment. I found Grinnell College by chance (or maybe it was divine intervention on the internet!). Two years on, I’m very happy with my decision to go here.
How I spend my time: I am part of the swimming team which has had a major role in keeping me active inside and outside the classroom. I also spend a lot of time with my friends.
A highlight from my time here: The students, the faculty and the staff really make of every day a unique opportunity to learn and create your own college experience. The classes are challenging, but the professors and other students are always willing to help and offer support.
My favorite class at Grinnell (so far): So far, Biology and Film classes have been the most rewarding learning experiences.
Three words that describe 'my' Grinnell: friendly, fun and challenging
My advice to new or aspiring Grinnellians: Coming to Grinnell will be the most frenetic but equally incredible four years of your life.
