The place(s) I call 'home': May Pen, Jamaica

Class year : 2014

Major/Intended Major: Biochemistry or Chemistry

Why I chose Grinnell: I have always wanted to study in the United States so I chose Grinnell in order to get an excellent liberal arts education and to find where my true interests lie.

How I spend my time: By playing pool, hanging out with my friends and occasionally playing table tennis.

A highlight from my time here: The highlight of my Grinnell experience was definitely IPOP. The first days of being at Grinnell were spent during the many IPOP sessions that allowed me to learn more about the academic expectations, how to find my way around and in general about campus life. It was a very interesting and fun learning experience.

My favorite class at Grinnell (so far): My favorite class so far was Introduction to Japanese because I have always wanted to learn more about Japanese culture and how to speak Japanese. At the beginning of the semester, my professor showed the class a video of two students speaking in Japanese who had taken this same class the semester before but I didn’t understand much and even wondered if I would really be able to talk like them. At the end of my first semester the professor replayed the video and I was able to understand everything they said and speak just as proficiently as they did. It felt really good to actually see the results of my hard work.

Three words that describe 'my' Grinnell: Challenging, different, friendly.

My advice to new or aspiring Grinnellians: Make sure to get winter clothes and boots as soon as you get here because it can get really cold really quick. Also check out the writing lab once you get here, it’s really helpful.
