The place(s) I call “home”: Vietnam (where I had been living for 18 years before going to college) and Grinnell (where I’ve spent my college life).

Why I chose Grinnell: I chose Grinnell College because of its academics reputation and various extracurricular activities it offers. Grinnell College's generous financial aid also makes it affordable for me to study in the United States.
How I spend my time: First and foremost, studying! Grinnell’s academic atmosphere was pretty intense so I have to work hard to get good grades. I tried out many different part-time jobs on campus: the Dining Hall, Mailing Service, Office of Alumni Relations and Development, the Library, and the Mathematics/Statistics department. Each job gave me a good experience and different skills. I also volunteered during breaks for the “Altbreak” or “Renew Orleans” programs. I love cooking so I invite friends over for Vietnamese food such as the “Summer roll” or “Pho”.
A highlight from my time here: Grinnell is a place full of opportunities and support. I remember one early morning in March 2011 that I received two acceptance letters. The first one was for my one-year off-campus study at the London School of Economics and Political Science during 2011/2012. More than 50 percent of any Grinnell’s graduating class participates in the Off-Campus Study program. The other acceptance letter was from the Career Development Office about my Grinnellink summer internship at Cleantech Open, a non-profit organization in California that finds, funds, and fosters cleantech entrepreneurs. I was very happy that my hard work paid off and also very grateful for all the opportunities I was given at Grinnell.
My favorite class at Grinnell (so far): ECN 233 – International Economics by professor Mutti. It’s one of the hardest courses I’ve taken at Grinnell so far. I put a lot of effort into that class and learned a lot.
Three words that describe ‘my’ Grinnell: hectic, exciting, worthwhile.
My advice to new or aspiring Grinnellians: Take courses from different departments; participate in any activities (social services, internships, part-time jobs) that can help you figure out your interests. Take some time off for friends and family and take advantage of the “Host family” program for international students.
