I have been at Grinnell College almost three years already, and it still surprises me. At times the schoolwork may be taxing, there may be too much to do and too little sleep the night before… and yet I often find myself inadvertently exhilarated by the place - especially the students, my friends.
This year I joined the Grinnell Singers and this brought with it the usual surprises that I have almost come to expect of Grinnell students. I suspect that there aren't many places where one can join a choir (and a really good choir at that) without being a music major or some substantial voice training. The Grinnell Singers, however, is a 50-member choir comprised of students from a variety of disciplines, from Chemistry to Gender & Women's Studies. We toured the East Coast over Spring Break, giving performances of 16th century motets, Bach, Russian Orthodox pieces - and even a premiere of a new work by our conductor.
What I've come to appreciate about Grinnell is just this: the students not only have such wide-ranging interests, but a depth and breadth of astounding talent that fuels and enriches those interests. I'm going to continue to be in Grinnell Singers in my senior year.
