Martin

Hi! My name is Martin Dluhos and I am a sophomore student from the Czech Republic. I am thrilled to be at Grinnell since I feel that here more than anywhere else my life is in exceptional balance. The variety of ways to organize one's student life and the possibilities to explore one's interests are the major assets of Grinnell College. For me who does not have the option at home to attend a post-secondary educational institution similar to a liberal-arts college in the United States, the flexibility to design my own academic schedule and to take courses from a great number of different fields is liberating and very fulfilling. For example, I have chosen Computer Science as my major, but at the same time have the opportunity to take Philosophy, in which I have become increasingly interested, or improve my language skills by taking German. At the beginning, I was a little skeptical about the ability of such a small school to maintain academic quality in so many different fields in sciences, soci al sciences, and huma nities. My experience here, however, has convinced me that Grinnell puts academic excellence in the first place and provides very good education in any field that one chooses to pursue. Another aspect that makes my life here a rich experience is the social, ethnic, and cultural diversity that is typical for Grinnell. This diversity makes even a meal in the dining hall or just everyday social interaction with other students a true learning experience. It is the friendly community that is essential to the wonderful atmosphere here on Grinnell campus.
