Dear Parents:

It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to Grinnell. I believe it is a special community in which education and growth take place on a number of levels.

As parents, you will have mixed emotions as your son or daughter starts this new experience. On the one hand you may feel excitement and pride, and on the other, apprehension or concern. These emotions are typical, but there are often very real questions that may come up at any time during the years your son or daughter is enrolled at Grinnell. To address such concerns, our Student Affairs office has compiled this Parents Handbook. I ask you to read it thoroughly and to keep it at hand as a guide if a problem occurs or question arises. This handbook is not, however, a substitute for personal attention by someone at the College. We are ready and eager to help your son or daughter and you, as parents, with any matter of concern.

It is important that you encourage your student to come to the Office of Student Affairs whenever there is a need for assistance, advice, or counseling. We offer comprehensive student services so that each student will have a rewarding experience both in and outside of the classroom.

Welcome to Grinnell College at this exciting moment. We have completed, over the past few years, several major projects aimed at keeping our student life programs the best available in a residential liberal arts setting.

Sincerely,

Russell K. Osgood
President

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the Grinnell College community! We are pleased that your son or daughter has chosen Grinnell. As President Osgood mentioned, Grinnell is a special community. I would describe it as a challenging environment both in and out of the classroom.

The primary purpose of the Student Affairs program is to complement and enhance the Colleges central educational mission. A concurrent goal is to develop a positive community, within each residence hall and on campus, that reflects and addresses the broad range of student experiences and life within a rigorous academic environment. The Student Affairs program is based on a unique philosophy of student self-governance, where students assume responsibility for themselves and their community within the residence halls, with few rules and regulations. Professional staff in Student Affairs fulfill an important role in this process by assisting students and empowering them to make appropriate decisions.

Here at Grinnell, we operate on the premise that students are adults. Therefore, we work directly with them and not through their parents, on problems they are experiencing academically or socially. The information that students share with us is kept confidential. We do encourage students to talk over any problems with their parents, but that doesn't always happen. If you have any concerns, please contact us. We want to work with you.

This handbook is designed to provide you with resources regarding our community. I hope that your questions are answered in these pages. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at or call the Student Affairs office at 641-269-3702.

Sincerely,

Thomas Crady
Vice President for Student Services
