Each student is assigned a mail box when he/she enters Grinnell College. This box number, a four-digit number, is mailed to each new student along with the room assignment in late July. The mailbox number remains the same from year to year.
Mail Services accepts and processes mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS), Federal Express, United Parcel Service (UPS) and other delivery services. Use the following address format when specifying your mailing location on campus: Student Name, 1115 8th Ave., # (Campus Box #), Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. This full address is required when shipping or receiving packages through United Parcel Service or Express Mail. These services will not deliver to P.O. Boxes. We limit packages to no more than 50 pounds. Mail Service employees will put a note in the student's mail box of notification that a package is waiting. Mail Services strongly discourages sending or receiving perishables (i.e. food) through the mail.
Students are responsible for picking up mail or parcels addressed to them, and in a timely manner. In the event that students will be out of town or unavailable to pick up mail or packages for an extended time (academic break, multiple day athletic event, etc.) they may discuss options with the Mail Services Manager at ext. 3421. Students are not allowed to pick up mail addressed to other students.
Student publications including the Scarlet & Black and The Gum are available in the Mailroom lobby. The lobby also contains a drop box for Fed Ex mailings (pick up at 3:00 p.m. each weekday) and a bulletin board in which student groups may post announcements or event information.
During extended academic breaks (Winter Break and Summer Break), first-class mail belonging to enrolled students is forwarded to the permanent (home) address in the College's student records database, unless students specify otherwise. Second-class mail (including magazines, newspapers, and catalogs) is placed in student mailboxes for two weeks after the start of break. After that period, second-class mail is recycled or discarded. Students are responsible for contacting publishers/vendors for a temporary address change during extended breaks.
