The Grinnell College Health Center has infirmary provisions, through the Grinnell Regional Medical Center College Sub-Acute Care Program, for students with communicable diseases. The student's need and the disease symptoms are evaluated. Some students choose to leave campus, others (e.g. students with chicken pox) are admitted to the College Sub-Acute Care Program until they are no longer contagious. The student is placed in isolation and monitored for medical complications. Daily contact is made by the Health Center and the student's primary physician.
Incoming students are required to have a completed health form on file at the Health Center prior to registration. Included in this information are (1) the dates of immunization for tetanus, measles, diphtheria, polio, rubella, and mumps, (2) a tuberculosis test result and date within the year, (3) a physical exam, (4) the family history, and (5) the signature of both the student and the doctor in the appropriate place.
Students are required to sign the medical release section of the health form. Although medical information is confidential, should circumstances necessitate, this information may be shared with health care providers, medical facilities, and/or the Office of Student Affairs. The sharing of information occurs mainly in an emergency situation, on a need-to-know basis.
If students are unable to obtain the necessary information to complete the health form before registration, they may sign a contract. The contract allows students an additional month to obtain the information. If the information is not received by the required date, $25.00 is assessed to their Continuing Enrollment Fee, and the students will not be allowed to register for second semester classes until health information is complete.
