**************** SGA Initiatives are coming ! **********
Attached in MS Word format is the Anti-War Initiative that has been
submitted.
Some have been asking, "Why is this an initiative? It doesn't really
have to do with the college." Our response... While the Plan of Action
does not ask much of the school, this is still an initiative of sorts.
It is a legitimized show of opposition by the student body and we felt
the best vehicle for this type of petition was through initiatives.
There are precedents of SGA sponsored resolutions addressing broader
social issues (one Brian Turner mentioned was in 1971 regarding U.S.
involvement in Cambodia).
So... what next?
Voting is all day Tuesday the 26th. To pass an initiative we need half
the student body voting and 2/3 of those voting to vote yes. With quick
math that's a little less than 500 students (assuming there are 1400
students on campus) So... how can we get people out voting and voting
Yes?
Talk about it with your friends. Wear a sign on voting day saying "Ask
me about initiatives" Bring a wirelessly connected laptop around campus
and get people to vote.
And more ... Getting out the vote and publicizing the results are
exactly what Laura Polstein [polstein] and Sarah Weiss [weisss] are
working on. If you'd like to help devise strategies and get out the
vote... contact one of them.
********** Film Fest (and FOOD) ***********
Come watch some war-related flicks and eat some food. Both are
documentaries and raise strong questions.
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT:
5:30 - 6:30 Forum Coffee House: IndyMedia's "9-11"
6:30 - 8:30 South Lounge : "The Hidden Wars of Desert Storm"
8:00 - Discussion and/or vigil
To help publicize contact Sequoia [classwar].
************* Letter Writing Day ************
Have you been unimpressed by the media coverage of anti-war stories?
Got some ideas about what's important and what should be covered? Even
if you don't -- give a piece of your mind to your local media.
Tuesday, 7 PM, place to be determined ... come to a letter writing
session. We hope to send letters to editors in many home towns and raise
the priority of war and anti-war coverage.
If you'd like to help or have questions contact Sequoia [classwar] or
John Bohman [bohmanjo]
*************** Aid Collection with Quaker Groups *********************
Many thanks go out to all those who went door to door collecting money
for the Aid Collection. We don't yet have a total for how much was
collected, but in Loose dorm alone, $40 was collected AND only three
people were unwilling or unable to give something !
To help put together the boxes:
Saturday, Nov 23, 4:00 PM South Lounge
Contact [student's name removed at their request, 12/15/04] with questions.
******************* Day After/Day Of Update ************
Preface: Let us hope that we never get to a "Day After" Action !!!
That being said...
At the state-wide anti-war meeting last Saturday a bit more was decided
on this event.
Day After (or Day Of) actions will be happening in Des Moines, Iowa City
and anywhere else groups put them on. The triggers for the events will
most likely be: Bombing outside the no fly zone, armed invasion of Iraq,
or storming of Baghdad. In the end, Kathleen McQuillen of the AFSC in
Des Moines will make the final call as to whether the trigger has been
met.
What happens after the trigger has gone off:
If the event happened before 2 PM, event is @ 5 PM
If the event happened between 2 and 7, event is @ 10 PM
If the event happened after 7, event is at noon the following day
What is the event?
The idea is to have an immediate presence and response to the start of a
war. Last night it was decided that Grinnell would focus its efforts on
getting to Des Moines to join others there. In Des Moines, people will
congregate near the federal building or state capitol and hold a
vigil-like event to mourn those who will perish in the oncoming war. We
would also have a back-up plan for bad weather- where we would stay in
Grinnell and do something more local.
What can you do?
We need lots of help. Especially with planning transportation in
advance. If you have a car that you could drive or lend on very short
notice, please please, please tell us.
Also, if you'd like to set-up a phone tree or work on media - we need
that too. Anything questions, comments, or desires to help: Contact
Shannon Heffernan [hefferna]
************** Learn about interning with the AFSC *********
Jeffrey J. Weiss, Peace Education Director, American Friends Service
Committee will be on campus Friday, November 22 to talk with students
about an internship opportunity with their organization. The primary
objective of AFSC is to provide humanitarian aid to refugees and victims
of war. In the United States AFSC works to promote nonviolence and to
stop war. The American Friends Service Committee has a national office
in Philadelphia but they have an ongoing presence with projects in 22
countries. Weiss will host an information session on Friday, November 22
at noon in the 1127 Park Conference Room, with time set aside from
10-noon and from 1-2 pm for walk in meetings for students who may want
to talk to Weiss individually. This is
a great summer internship opportunity for students considering a grant!
************** New Time and place for Info Sessions ********************
Starting after Thanksgiving Break the News/Info Sharing Session will be
at lunchtime!
Wednesdays, 12-1, Main Lounge (right outside Quad dining hall) You can
grab you lunch from Quad and then join the discussion.

********* Dec 10th National Day of Action ***************
Around the country students are working on doing some sort of Anti-War
action on December 10th. Last night, we had no one who could take on
the planning of such an event. If anyone has an idea for what to do and
can help organize it, please contact Eli Zigas [zigaseli].
************** Ecumenical Prayer Service for Peace in DSM
****************
ECUMENICAL PRAYER SERVICE FOR PEACE
SUNDAY, NOV 24; 4:00 PM
ST JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH;
600 6TH AVE. , DM
The US was 8 or 9 years into the Vietnam war before MLK's famous "Time
to Break the Silence" speech. Today, while the US administration is
still planning for a major escalation of its war against Iraq, almost
all of the major denominations have spoken out against it.
Whether you are involved in a faith community or not, please join in
this unique anti-war witness. Also take the opportunity to stay and
build community during the hospitality following the service. It takes
many voices to stop a war. Please support the religious leaders stepping
forth to oppose this war.
Bishop Gregory Palmer of the Iowa United Methodist Conference will
deliver the keynote.
Offering a brief faith witness:
Bishop Steve Bolie of the Community of Christ, Des Moines and Lamoni
Stakes; Bishop Joseph Charron of the Catholic Diocese of Des Moines; Dr.
Richard Guentert, Regional Minister of the Christian Church of the Upper
Midwest; Bishop Philip Hougen of the ELCA, Southeastern Iowa Synod;
Reverend Susan Ingham, Conference Minister of the Iowa Conference of the
United Church of Christ; Reverend Canon Sharon Mahood, Interim Bishop of
the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa;
Reverend Cheryl Thomas of the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A.;
Reverend
Kimberly Young of the Presbytery of Des Moines ; Mikel Johnson, Society
of Friends.
All clergy attending are invited to vest (the color for the day is
white) and process. Clergy will meet in Neumann Hall, across from the
sanctuary) at 3:30 p.m.
A community choir will convene at 3:15 p.m. at St. John's to prepare to
lead the music in the service. Larry Christensen, Choir Director at St.
John's will direct. All are welcome. Choir participants are invited to
wear choir robes from their own congregations.
