******* Tuesday Special Meeting/ State of the Union **********
IMPORTANT: The anti-war meeting on Tuesday has a slight tweak to it.
Given the State of the Union address we are making the night a communal
affair.
Join the anti-war alliance starting @ 8 PM in the North Lounge (not the
South) in the Forum to watch the State of the Union. Bring your
friends, some popcorn, and your ears...
If it's not ridiculously long, we will consider having the regular
meeting following the speech. There is lots to discuss including what
we're going to do second semester as well as possible restructure of the
organization.
****** Signs and Flags for free *******
If you would like a no war sign for your front lawn or car, free of
charge, please contact Eli Zigas [zigaseli].
Supplies are very limited... first come first serve... and please make
sure you will make it visible ;)

Many thanks to Sheree Andrews in Student Affairs for integrating the
page with the Grinnell standard style.
********** Boswell signs onto Brown-Kind letter *************
I have been assured by Ned Michalek, Legislative Director for
Congressman Boswell (3rd Iowa, represents Grinnell) that the
representative signed onto the Brown/Kind letter that was circulated in
Congress and then sent to the President with over 120 signatures of
representatives. The letter encourages the President to allow the UN
inspections the time they need. (The letter is attached in .pdf format)
******* Grinnellian in France sends anti-war report ***********
From Greger on study abroad in Paris:
I'm spending this semester in France and I thought you might be
interested in what's going on here, anti war wise. The city is pretty
well mobilized against war, particularly the large body of students.
There was a demonstration in the day before I got here and another one
is planned for tomorrow. The immediate goal is to encourage Chirac to
use his security council veto against a pro-war resolution and its
likely that he will. France is virtually 100% against the war anyway so
there's been a lot of success in petitioning and what
not too. You guys aren't alone in what you're doing. Good luck!
Greger Calhan [calhan]
******* Chris Gaunt, on trial for non-violent direct action *********
[Editor's Note: While this does not directly pertain to Iraq, given the
extraordinary circumstances of Chris' situation and her connection with
the Grinnell Anti-War Alliance, it is being placed in the digest]
Chris Gaunt, a fellow Grinnell Anti-Warrer will go before a judge on
Monday, facing federal trespass charges.
See her press release attached in MS Word format
************ Legislation to Repeal Authorization of Force **************
Some members of Congress, including Sheila Jackson Lee think that the
authorization for force in Iraq should be repealed...
See the legislation she introduced (HCON 2 IH):

************* Poetry against the war ***************
Andrew Motion's (UK poet laureate) verse questioning the reasons for war
published in the Guardian:
They read good books, and quote, but never learn
a language other than the scream of rocket-burn.
Our straighter talk is drowned but ironclad;
Elections, money, empire, oil and Dad.
