TRIAL FOR ANTI-WAR PROTESTORS SET FOR MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3
***TRIAL:
Trial for five Iowans who were arrested while blocking the
entrance to the Iowa Air National Guard base in Des Moines, Iowa, in
October is set to begin at 8 AM, Monday, February 3, at the Polk County
Court House, 500 Mulberry Street, Des Moines. Jury selection will begin
that morning for the trial that is expected to last most of the week.
On trial are, Christine Gaunt and Brian Turner of Grinnell, Rev.
Jennifer Davis and Kent Sensenig of Cedar Falls and Brian Terrell of
Maloy, Iowa.
The five were among 14 arrested while attempting to deliver a
message to members of the 135th Fighter Wing of the Iowa Guard as they
were preparing to fly to the Middle East to patrol the 'no fly' zones
over Iraq. The message taken to the Guard noted that the 'no fly' zone
patrols and bombings are not sanctioned by international law, have
killed Iraqi civilians and threaten to provoke further violence in the
region.
Guard members were cautioned by protesters not to obey illegal or
immoral orders and to stay home.
Trespass Charges filed in District Court allege that the
defendants remained at the base "without ... justification after being
told to vacate therefrom" by base authorities. The defendants' case
will be based upon the evident, abundant and urgent justification for
their actions, attempting to prevent the crime of killing of innocent
Iraqi civilians and the possible provocation of a world war.
***RALLY
A rally will be held by supporters on the court house steps
Monday morning at 9 AM. (500 Mulberry St., DM)
***PUBLIC FORUM & SOCIAL GATHERING
On Tuesday evening at 7PM at the Friend's Meeting
House, 4211 Grand Ave. Des Moines, there will be a public forum on the
trial, including music, discussion of international law and other issues
of the trial, with witnesses, defendants and attorney Sally Frank.
Police evidence videos of the arrest will be shown. The occasion will
also be a celebration of the second birthday of Sally Frank's daughter,

IMPACT OF WAR ON THE PEOPLE OF IOWA
Public Forum
Wednesday, Feb. 5; 7:00 - 9 :00 pm
Roosevelt HS; 4419 Center St, DM
The planned war against Iraq is estimated to cost $100 billion.
Rebuilding estimates range from $50 - $150 billion.
20% of the Iowa State budget comes from federal funding.
What is the economic impact for the people of Iowa?
How will city and state budgets be affected?
Councilman Frank Cownie and State Senator Jack Holveck are taking the
lead in presenting a public forum addressing these questions. Panelists
will include representatives from the medical community, labor and local
government. A brief historical overview of the country of Iraq will be
presented.
In what other ways will the people of Iowa be impacted by a war against
the people of Iraq?
You are invited to participate in this important democratic process.
Microphones will be available for public comment and questions.

Random Note for the day:
MODERATOR: Should the people of the world look at the United States,
Governor, and say, should they fear us, should they welcome our
involvement, should they see us as a friend, everybody in the world? How
would you project us around the world, as president?
BUSH: Well, I think they ought to look at us as a country that
understands freedom where it doesn't matter who you are or how you're
raised or where you're from, that you can succeed. I don't think they'll
look at us with envy. It really depends upon how our nation conducts
itself in foreign policy. If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent
us. If we're a humble nation, but strong, they'll welcome us. And it's
-- our nation stands alone right now in the world in terms of power, and
that's why we have to be humble. And yet project strength in a way that
promotes freedom. So I don't think they ought to look at us in any way
other than what we are. We're a freedom-loving nation and if we're an
arrogant nation they'll view us that way, but if we're a humble nation
they'll respect us.
