***** Grinnell Student Derrick Mitchell called to active duty
**********
Derrick Mitchell has been called to active duty. To the best of my
knowledge he is currently in Iowa City, joining with others in the Iowa
Army National Guard preparing to be deployed. While the deployment
orders are not certain, most likely Derrick will be going to the Middle
East. Updates will be sent out when more information is known. Derrick
is the only student at Grinnell to be on active duty as far as I know.
If anyone can help keep track of Derrick's deployment please contact Eli
Zigas [zigaseli]
****** Rice for Peace - Last Day Today (Friday) *******
Friday in the post office in the morning until 1:30 - buy a small
package of rice and send it to the White House with the message... "Feed
the People of Iraq - Don't go to War!" Sponsored by Social Justice
Action Group. To learn more contact [sjag] or
http://www.riceforpeace.org/
********* Debate Team will debate Grinnell activism ********
The Grinnell debating union is presenting a debate on student/community
activism at Grinnell, and activism in general. We would like your help
in
detailing institutional activism within the college at all levels,
student run organizations, how we compare to other institutions, and
anything interesting you may have to share about activism at Grinnell.
We are looking for statistics and examples of changing mindsets as well
as radical activism; everything from alt break trips, to the faculty
organized ad, to the poetry read-in, to the radical cheerleaders.
Thank you for whatever you can share with us.
Please come to listen and participate in our debate February 25,
~The Opposition Team (Contact : Anne Hagerty [Hagertya])
(we are arguing activism is alive and well)
********* Feb. 26th, Anti-War film in film festival ****************
From Tony Pham - SGA Films Chair [films]
Wednesday, February 26 @ 7 PM in Harris Cinema as part of the College
Film Festival
Return to Innocence directed by Vu Tran
A lonely Vietnam War veteran remembers his old friend who died during
the war. He recalls all the horrified images of the war. My intention in
this film was not taking a side; I am just opposing war, and feeling for
the innocent people who died in this horrible war.
Vu Tran I was born in Vietnam on July 30th, 1981. In late June of 1991,
a
fishing boat carried more than 100 souls, including his family of four,
away
from the mainland of Vietnam toward the South China Sea. Luckily, his
family
made it to the United States, where my aunt awaited us in Apple Valley,
Minnesota, a world apart from Vietnam.
*****Feb. 26th, "Virtual March on Washington" *******
We may also table on this day... if anyone is interested please say so
at the Tuesday meeting or email Eli Zigas [zigaseli].
With your help, on February 26th, every Senate office will receive a
call EVERY MINUTE from a constituent, as they receive a simultaneous
crush of faxes and email. In New York and Los Angeles, "anti-war
rooms" will highlight the progress of the day for national media. Local
media will visit the "anti-war room" online, to monitor this
constituent march throughout the day.
With your help, every Senate office switchboard will be lit up all day
with our anti-war messages. This will be a powerful reminder of the
bread and depth of opposition to a war in Iraq.

JUSTICECORPS: Careers Creating Social Change!
Full-Time Community Organizing Jobs for Economic Justice
Our Goal
In the interest of building and sustaining a widespread grassroots
movement for social and economic justice, JUSTICECORPS seeks to attract
top-notch recent graduates and young activists to jobs devoted to making
America a more equitable society. Struggles to end homelessness, create
a National Affordable Housing Trust Fund, renew communities, reform
welfare and education, and redirect budget priorities require the
participation and leadership of a new generation of social change
activists. JUSTICECORPS is a strategy for linking young activists to
local, state, and national battles for progressive change. In its
inaugural year 2002, JUSTICECORPS accepted and placed 15 applicants.
This year, we aim to expand to create 20-30 more jobs.
Organizing and Advocacy Jobs
JUSTICECORPS offers positions with community organizations on the front
lines of battles for economic justice. Such groups include the
nationwide affiliates of ACORN (Associated Community Organizations for
Reform Now), the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition,
Wisconsin's WISDOM, and San Francisco's Tenderloin Housing Clinic.
JUSTICECORPS jobs typically involve community organizing on local,
state, and national campaigns. Duties include door-to-door recruitment,
leadership development, organizing a community base, and coordinating
and initiating strategic campaigns.
JUSTICECORPS is not an internship. All placements are one-year
professional salaried positions with the participating organizations,
earning between $18,500--$25,000 plus benefits. Following the initial
year, we encourage JUSTICECORPS organizers to obtain ongoing, full-time
employment with their organization or with other economic justice
groups. All JUSTICECORPS organizers are required to attend a training
with the nation's leading organizers and activists in August. Jobs are
scheduled to begin in early September, 2003.
How To Apply
Qualifications: We are seeking recent college graduates and young
activists interested in social and economic justice, with organizing or
activist experience. People of color and Spanish speakers strongly
encouraged to apply.
Visit our website www.JUSTICECORPS.org for information on how to apply.
Application deadline is April 7, 2003. Admittance is rolling so
applicants are encouraged to apply early. Phone interviews will begin
in March with final selections made by May 1. For those who choose to
participate, a commitment to the program is required by May 15.
For more information: E-mail Justicecorps@thclinic.org or visit
www.JUSTICECORPS.org
JUSTICECORPS is a project of Housing America. Housing America Director
Randy Shaw has worked on economic justice campaigns for 20 years and is
the author of The Activist's Handbook and Reclaiming America: Nike,
Clean Air, and the New National Activism. JUSTICECORPS is not affiliated

********* University of IA passes anti-war resolution ************
Earlier this week the University of Iowa passed a resolution in their
student government opposing the war ! As far as I know, that brings the
Iowa total to 2. Check www.citiesforpeace.org for more info on
resolutions in general
The city, Iowa City, that is ... is also currently working on getting
one passed.
******** British Dossier the result of plagiarism ********
This is not a joke... there is credible evidence that the British Gov't
plagiarized others work. And, they possibly even changed wording to make
their "dossier" on Iraq more convincing.

Poem for the day:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/0
2/14/ED85663.DTL
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
And a vast paranoia sweeps across the land
And America turns the attack on its Twin Towers
Into the beginning of the Third World War
The war with the Third World
And the terrorists in Washington
Are drafting all the young men
And no one speaks
And they are rousting out
All the ones with turbans
And they are flushing out
All the strange immigrants
And they are shipping all the young men
To the killing fields again
And no one speaks
And when they come to round up
All the great writers and poets and painters
The National Endowment of the Arts of Complacency
Will not speak
While all the young men
Will be killing all the young men
In the killing fields again
So now is the time for you to speak
All you lovers of liberty
All you lovers of the pursuit of happiness
All you lovers and sleepers
Deep in your private dreams
Now is the time for you to speak
O silent majority
Before they come for you
