Anti-Warrers:
Editor's Note: The update and digest will resume after Spring Break
(i.e. March 30th). For all of you who are going on break... enjoy, and
let us hope that war does not begin. One thing that gives me hope is
that many of us believed that we were going to war over Winter Break...
and it didn't happen. There are many ways people can get involved over
break. Some of them are below.
In this update:
- RESPONSE NEEDED : April 5th looking for transport
- Global Vigil's for Peace this weekend
- DC Protest (weekend) and Mass Civil Disobedience Monday
- What to do if War Begins and we're still on break
- FREE Tickets Available to see President Clinton at U of IA
- Amazing Document questions threat of Iraq
- How to Contact the UN envoys
- $1500 Raised for Chris Gaunt !
- Wearing Art for Peace May 3rd
- Next Meeting: Tuesday after break
- News Digest
******** RESPONSE NEEDED : April 5th looking for transport **********
[flyer attached]
On April 5th a large anti-war protest is planned for noon in DSM. The
war may be over by then, but since we don't know, we're still going to
plan for the protest. The organizers are hoping to get over 1000
people, which would make this one of the largest Iowa protests in recent
history. Grinnell could add many to this protest, but ....
We need cars. We were only able to reserve one campus mini-van and so
we are now very pressed for cars. If you think you either have a car
that you will drive or can donate from about 11-6 on April 5th, please
contact Jessica Petertil [Petertil].
Also, there is a large environmental conference on Grinnell's campus
that weekend, organized by Free the Planet [ftp]. Many on this list may
have a conflict because of this, so please keep it in mind.
****** Global Vigil's for Peace this weekend *******
Candleight Vigil in Grinnell Sunday:
From Prof. David Ellison [Ellison]
I have been in contact with some people from the Grinnell community and
we have agreed to meet to hold the vigil at the corner of 6th Ave and
Park st. We will meet at 7pm this Sunday evening. Our intent is to line
both sides of the street with people holding candles. Please try to
bring your own candles, but we will have some extra for those who do not
have any at home.
Unfortunately, the timing is bad for our students, so not many are
likely to be there. But I would certainly welcome those who will be in
town and can make it.

Nonviolent Direct Action in DC at the Capitol on Monday March 17th
A Call to Action from United for Peace and Justice, National Youth and
Student Peace Coalition, Iraq Pledge of Resistance and the National
Peace Lobby Project
WAR IS NOT INEVITABLE! We Must Stop It Now. We call upon the American
people to take nonviolent direct action to stop this war! Congress has
the constitutional power to stop this war and has been silent.
WE DEMAND THAT CONGRESS: REPRESENT the will of the people, REPEAL Bush's
war authorization and RE-ALLOCATE our money to schools, jobs, health
care and other human needs.
While war is imminent we cannot rest. March 17 will begin a WEEK OF
NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION. From March 17-24 we will take action in the
halls and offices of Congress in DC and across this nation -- filling
the jails until they answer the people's call for peace and justice!
MARCH 15-17th: COME TO DC IN LARGE NUMBERS, to reclaim democracy and
stop the war. If you are far away, SEND A DELEGATION from your local
community to engage in nonviolent direct action or lobbying at the
Capitol on Monday, March 17.
If you can't come to DC, go to your representative's DISTRICT OFFICE (be
sure to post your local activities at www.unitedforpeace.org)
LOBBY NOW: call, fax, and email your congressional reps in Washington.
GO TO LOCAL CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES on THURS or FRIDAY, March 13 and 14
and declare your communities' intentions to take nonviolent direct
action to hold them accountable for this war.
Nonviolent Civil Disobedience training and preparatory meetings will be
held on Sunday, March 16.
Together, we have the power to stop this war and change history!

********* Amazing Document questions threat of Iraq ************
By far one of the most comprehensive and well documented assessments of
the administration's claims of the threat of Iraq
This report -- released by Condoleezza Rice's former professor at the
University of Denver -- demonstrates the Bush Administration is
misleading the public about the threat posed by Iraq:
It's a large file, but worth it:

************** $1500 Raised for Chris Gaunt ! *************
From Kent McClelland [mcclel]:
On behalf of the group of people who organized the benefit potluck
for Chris Gaunt last Saturday night, I'd like to thank everyone who
contributed to making the event a success.
About 40 people--a cross-generational mix of students, faculty, and
family members from across the campus community--gathered at the
Schrifts' house for dinner Saturday evening. The food was
delicious, as expected, but people were unexpectedly generous.
Donations for Chris totaled approximately $1500, with contributions
still coming in from people who were unable to attend on Saturday.
Thank you!
Chris is an impressively courageous woman, willing to put herself at
risk to stand up for what she believes. I'm sure she'll be gratified
by this tangible outpouring of support from the college community.

********* Wearing Art for Peace May 3rd ********
If anyone would like to organize this, contact Eli Zigas [zigaseli]:
On February 5th, Colin Powell stood before the U. N. to make his case
for a new resolution authorizing the U.S. to take military action
against Iraq. Notably absent was Picasso's "Guernica", (pronounced
WARE-nee-ka) perhaps one of the this century's greatest, most unsettling
artistic images depicting the horrors of war. Under pressure from the
U.S. Government, The tapestry was covered prior to the Secretary of
State's speech out of concern that the painting's message might speak to
historical parallels that the Bush administration and UN officials were
clearly determined that the media or the public should not make.
Just as Picasso was moved by terrible attacks on a small Basque village
in northern Spain in 1937 to create a mural condemning the brutality of
war, people all over the world have begun looking for ways to express
their own outrage at the circumstances unfolding before us.
On May 3rd, 2003, The Works on Shirts Project
(http://www.worksonshirts.org) will be staging "WEARNICA", an
international exhibition of artistic reactions to war, mounted on the
backs of white cotton dress shirts and worn into cultural, commercial
and governmental locations around the globe to raise public awareness of
the realities of war in our time.
We need your help. With your help, we can send a message to the Bush
administration and the world that the power of art to reveal the horrors
of war and the promise of peace cannot be covered up. We need artists,
organizers and volunteers to make this event a success. Previous
artistic experience is not required for participation, only a desire to
personally express your reaction to this crisis. Please forward this
information to your members and urge them to spread the word.
The Idea is Simple:
At each show, participants will arrive individually and then gather at
the predetermined location wearing an original piece of anti-war
inspired artwork, rendered or mounted on the back of a white cotton
dress shirt. By creating artwork that can be worn as clothing, it's
possible to stage large-scale exhibits in any location open to the
public. As long as the individual participants conform to the standard
behavior for the general public in the space, the white dress shirts
will tie the pieces together into a cohesive whole, and the images and
the show will speak for themselves.
Toronto Star art critic Peter Goddard wrote of the Guernica coverup: "If
there is a war with Iraq, there's already been the first casualty -
art." We have the power to change that. Where one image has been
silenced, a thousand will drown out the drums of war.
