***** Coverage of April 5th Protest **********
We estimated about 50 Grinnellians went to the protest and we were
definitely the loudest group if not the largest contingent. Estimates
of total crowd size were 400-500, making it the largest anti-war in Iraq
protest in Des Moines.

More description on attached Word Document:
A coalition of campus organizations at Wartburg College including
Students for Peace and Justice, Amnesty International, and Campus
Ministry are calling a fast, beginning March 24th, in response to the
tragic events that have affected Americans, Iraqis, and citizens
worldwide. A proposal has been written to Wartburg Food Services to
reimburse our students for their evening meal. We are encouraging
faculty, staff, community members and students who are not on a meal
plan to donate a portion of what they would typically spend. This
coalition of Wartburg organizations would like to strongly urge other
Iowa institutions and organizations to join us in creating solidarity
with the Iraqi civilians.

Hey Student Groups,
What's more fun than spending a Sunday studying?
SPENDING a Sunday with your student group members at Relays!
Relays are an old idea made new again by Ale our super-motivated prez.
In the 70's and 80's, when the drinking age was 18, the school hosted a
series of 'relay' events between students and faulty that revolved
around drinking. Of course Ale thought this was cool (and so did SGA)!
SO we've reinstated Relays, but this time as a non-alcoholic event...
On Saturday the 19th groups are ivited to participate in relays events
against other teams. If you would like to organize a team email
[relays].
On Sunday, Relays will host a student-family fun day. We would like
student groups to do 1 or more of these things.
1. Host a table! Host a table with games, or crafts, or info about your
group (similar to the organization fair we have at the beginning of the
year). For example SOL is doing face painting and balloon animals.
Email [relays] to reserve a table and share your theme.
2. Perform! A stage wil be set-up from 12-5:30. Play, dance, read, or whatever you've always wanted to do on stage! Email [concerts] to
reserve a time slot.
3. One word: Inflatables. Giant pieces of plastic full of air and ...
well... FUN! SGA reserved 3 giant inflatables for us to climb on, play
on, frolic on. We just need YOU to man or woman them for one hour. Ale
is asking that 2 representatives from each group volunteer to be in
charge of an inflatable for an hour. There are 3 inflattables and they
will be open for 7 hours. So two people an hour x 7 hours x 3
inflatables = your help needed. Email [relays] if you can help.
********* Rachel Corrie ************ While we were going to discuss this at the last meeting, only 6 people

A lot has changed since the National Conference in February. Many new campuses have joined,
April 5th has come and gone, and it seems the occcpation is about to begin. This will likely be our
only large scale assembly before next school year (in the fall) and we should work to
have all of the midwest CAN groups represented and to foster debate and discussion about the
future of the sudent movement in light of the "victory" in Baghdad.
Please try to have at least one member of your campus antiwar committee
on this chat to help plan for this important conference. Proposed dates for
the conference are either April 26-27 or May 3-4. Proposed location is Northwestern University in Evanston, IL (just north of Chicago.)

National Network to End War Grassroots Conference: May 1-4, University
of MD
http://www.endthewar.org/conference.htm
Since the summer of 2002 peace activists have been protesting
non-stop against a war with Iraq. We now invite grassroots activists
from around the United States to meet in Maryland where we will
dedicate four days to ourselves - two days to build our skills and
knowledge base and two days to create a plan of action for the coming
year.
Join others from around the United States for this conference and action
event. The National Network to End the War Against Iraq was formed in
February of 2001 (before 9-11) to work toward ending UN sanctions that
have resulted in massive suffering and death for the Iraqi people. Over
the past year Network members have worked relentlessly to prevent a US
invasion of Iraq because it will surely bring more human suffering and
death to the Iraqi people and possibly spreading violence throughout
Iraq and the region. This will be the first opportunity since the onset
of the invasion for so many activists and organizations across the
country to come together for sustained movement-building.
There will be THREE COMPONENTS to this weekend:
1. A Protest Action: to take place on the weekend, and to be planned
in conjunction with participant planning of the conference.
2. May 1st to 2nd: Workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics
relating to the US-Iraq conflict.
3. May 3rd to 4th: Formal meetings and informal get-togethers among
grassroots activists to develop a series of effective actions for the
coming year.
Some of the sessions that are expected to be well attended:
--Discussion of what have been the most and least effective campaigns
and strategies --Setting new objectives and priorities based on the onset and outcomes
of war
--Selecting the key action proposals and programs for the next year
--How to build a grassroots network infrastructure that can mount and
sustain powerful actions

RADFEST 2003
MIDWEST SOCIAL FORUM
20TH ANNIVERSARY
Aurora University
George Williams - Lake Geneva Campus
Williams Bay, WI
May 30-June 1, 2003
www.ssc.wisc.edu/havenscenter
Dear friend:
I would like to invite you to RadFest 2003, an annual weekend conference
for progressive activists and academics organized by the A. E. Havens
Center for the Study of Social Structure and Social Change at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. The central goal of the conference is
to provide an opportunity for progressive activists, organizers, and
intellectuals to come together to discuss issues of mutual interest and
concern, strengthen networks, and devise strategies for progressive
social, economic, and political change. RadFest has grown significantly
in recent years, becoming an important annual gathering for
progressives. Last year, for example, approximately 300 people from
throughout the upper Midwest and beyond attended. This year, which will
be the 20th anniversary of the conference, we expect a considerably
larger turnout.
The conference will take place on the weekend of May 30-June 1, 2003 at
the George Williams - Lake Geneva Campus of Aurora University 240 acres
of rolling, wooded hillside located on the shores of Lake Geneva, about
50 miles southwest of Milwaukee, 70 miles southeast of Madison, and 80
miles northwest of Chicago.
