**** Grinnell Facutly Organizing against the War ********
Members of Grinnell's faculty met on Fri. to discuss what can be done
about the War in Iraq. More information on this soon.
****** Iowans For Peace Organizational Meeting ********
October 19 : 2 PM - 4 PM Des Moines. More details to come soon.
************* Protests *****************
In Des Moines, Oct. 26th
Two Separate types. One is for direct action (in this case it includes
possibly being arrested). The other for those not interested in taking
that risk.
The below is from Chris Gaunt (236-3355). Contact her with questions:
Oct. 26; 11 am Stop the War action at the Iowa Air Guard Base in DM
There will be a legal protest and an opportunity for direct action .
Oct. 26; 1pm at Nollen Plaza in DM - Rally in support of civil
liberties and against war. There may be a solidarity march to the jail.
The rally and demonstration that is being planned at the Des Moines
Airport against the Iowa Air Guard being sent next month to fly the no
fly zones in Iraq again is set for 11 am on Saturday October 26. Father
Frank Cordaro from the Catholic Worker has planned & helped organize
this even in previous years. On Friday night there will be a
gathering (as yet unnamed location, possibly at Drake U.), education
specifically about the no fly zones, nonviolence training (mandatory for
those who plan to do the direct action), and last minute strategy.
I plan to do the direct action this year, so folks can contact me for
more info: Chris Gaunt 236-3355 weekdays (I work weekends at Burling),
or gaunt@grinnell.edu
My stance on doing this nonviolent direct action is that it is something
that I can say NO to. NO, I do not approve of the Iowa Air Guard being
sent to fly the no fly zones in Iraq again. As a peace-loving citizen,
I see this as something I CAN and WILL do.

In Washington, D.C. and San Francisco also on October 26th

********* Environmental Stats on Iraq**************
WASHINGTON, DC, October 10, 2002 - The latest environmental, economic,
and
social information on Iraq and other Persian Gulf countries is now
readily
available through a free, interactive website developed by the World
Resources
Institute (WRI).
The Iraq site, http://www.wri.org/iraq/index.html, provides a closer
look at
Iraq and the Persian Gulf based on a much larger collection of
information
from EarthTrends: The Environmental Information Portal. Data and
analyses are available in various formats, including country profiles,
data tables, watershed maps, and articles. The Iraq site is also easily
accessible through the WRI Newsroom
(http://newsroom.wri.org).

Random Note for the day:
From NY TIMES: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/07/technology/07SHAR.html
Other recent examples of doctored photographs circulated on the Net
include one of President Bush with a group of school children, holding a
book while a girl reads from another copy of the same book. In the
altered picture, Mr. Bush is holding his copy of the book upside down.
