*************** We Have a Name *********************
After a vote last night, we decided on Anti-War Alliance
********* Mark Your Calendar for Faculty Panel Discussion ************
Call it a panel, a forum, or a teach-in. Either way it's still being finalized:
Wed, Oct 30, 4:15 in ARH 302 : "The Costs of War: A Teach-In on the Mobilization Against Iraq"
************** See which faculty are working on what *********
See attached .txt file for which faculty are working on what topics anti-war related
************** See which students are working on what ***********
See attached .doc file for students doing stuff
************ What is this whole "Day After" protest idea? ********
There was an idea from a while back, mentioned in the Radical Student Collective at one point, that we be prepared to do some sort of protest when some trigger event occurred. For instance, once bombs start dropping in Iraq, we go to the Federal Building in Des Moines the next day at 5 PM to protest. Nothing has exactly been finalized on this. We have yet to decide on a trigger, yet to decide on an action etc. etc.
Shannon Heffernan [hefferna] and Whitney Davidson [Davidson] will be kicking around ideas at the Oct. 19th meeting in Des Moines. IF you have any ideas about it, contact them.
****** Tight Races for candidates who voted against HJ 114 ********
From Global Exchange/ Unitedforpeace.org:
Below are some states where there are tight races with anti-war candidates being challenged by pro-war candidates. These are candidates who could use your support. Additionally, Bush Administration officials will probably visit these states in the next few weeks and should be dogged by protest for their war mongering.
Anti-War Candidates in Tight Races: California: Lois Capps, 22nd California, (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo) Connecticut: Jim Maloney, 5th Connecticut (Waterbury, Danbury) Illinois: Lane Evans, 17th Illinois District (near Moline and Galesburg) Indiania: Julia Carson, 10th Indiana, (Indianapolis) Minnesota: Paul Wellstone, Minnesota New Jersey: Rush Holt, 12th New Jersey (Princeton Junction) Washington: Rick Larsen, 2nd Washington, (Everett and Bellingham) and Jay Inslee 1st Washington (Poulsbo and Mountlake Terrace) Wisconsin: Tammy Baldwin, 2nd Wisconsin (Madison)
If you have information about pro-war incumbents who are being challenged by anti-war candidates, please let us know so we can spread the word to help kick out the war mongers. Write to peace@globalexchange.org.
************** Fax members of the UN Security Council ****************
The United Nations Security Council has not yet approved a US invasion of Iraq. While the war resolution passed by Congress says the US does not have to wait for UN approval to invade Iraq, the fact remains that US policy makers would find it politically difficult, if not impossible, to launch a war without a UN mandate. If we can prevent the UN from approving an invasion, we could still stop this war.
Please join us in calling on the United Nations to stand up for international law and resist the Bush Administration's rush to war.
.You can fax members of the UN Security Council TODAY through the Global Exchange website at http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/iraq/StopWar101502.html
******** Fall Break Reading ********
