****** MARK YOUR CALENDAR - Please come to Tues (11/12/02) Meeting
*******
ARH 130, Nov 12 @ 9:00 PM
Please, please, please come. (Can you tell I'm pleading) We're at a
crucial point in the organization. There's a lot of momentum coming off
some successful events and the big question is What Next? That is what
this meeting is to decide. I've been getting ideas left and right but
we can't do anything unless we have people to do them. And the only way
we'll know if people can do things, is if we meet and decide who can do
what. So, please mark your calendar for Tues night, hold that hour
inviolable and come let's talk about WHAT NEXT.
Some teasers for possible ideas:
More speakers (see next section)
Creating an anti-war reader
Collaborating with faculty
Anti-war film fest
Fundraising
And more....
*********** HELP WANTED: BRING A SPEAKER TO CAMPUS *********
If you want to get involved straight away, Nova is looking for someone
just like YOU to help her bring this crazy cat to campus. See below :
From Nova McGiffert
I have a dynamite speaker who is interested in coming to
Grinnell to speak. His name is Marv Davidov and he is a long time social
activist from the twin cities.
Right now he is a professor at St Thomas University in St. Paul but
spends
much of his time speaking and organizing all over the country. He
started the Honeywell Project, which is an organization that confronts
corporate
misconduct through civil disobedience. He was a freedom rider during the
civil rights movement and has put himself out in the forefront in many
causes. One of his specialties is civil disobedience. I met him and he
is an
amazing person. I'd say his strongest quality is his ability to speak to
all
kinds of people in all kinds of formats.
Marv needs to come to campus. I am more than happy to work on getting
the
funding to bring him here, but need some help. Anyone interested?

******************** Direct Action update ********************
The Direct Action group met tonight. So everyone on this list
understands: Officially the Antiwar Alliance and the direct action
group are separate. The Antiwar alliance, while supportive of direct
action (hell a lot of people are doing both), is focused on tactics that
are all within the law.
Below is notes/minutes from Direct Action meeting from Avram Lyon:
- We decided (by consensus) to work on a consensus basis.
- Suggested action was die-in/lockdown at the Des Moines federal
building.
- I opted to be the facilitator for our email communiques, so contact me
to send to the list.
- I will be sending out an email to people at various schools throughout
Iowa to mobilize local affinity groups, who will pick spokespeople, much
as we did, and organize the united action.
- Next Thursday, we will meet again in the basement of the Forum at 8
pm, then go on to whatever open PDR we find. We know that this
interferes with the end of EAG's meetings, so EAG people should come
down when they're done... We'll try to be essentially done in time for
FAC at 9 pm.
I'll send out another email to remind people of the meeting and with any
new information that comes up.

Random Note for the day:
Antiwar organizing becomes all the more important now that Congress in
controlled by Republicans. There are Republicans who oppose the war,
however, the dynamic will be different now.
Also, I will be gone from Thurs to Mon and email connections is up in
the air. So if I don't get back to you quickly, that's why.
