CARW has established the following goals and means to attaining these goals as a focus for our existence.
Goals:
-To aid white people in exploring their own racial identity.
-To help white individuals to feel more comfortable speaking in a group about race, racism and privilege.
-To learn about the historical construction of race, and to explore and challenge these dominant systems of understanding and categorizing difference.
-To facilitate the continual and infinite process of white people identifying, challenging, confronting, and taking responsibility for their own racism and privilege.
-To become stronger as individuals, and as a group, in confronting racism in interpersonal situations as well as in institutions.
-To facilitate an open and productive dialogue about race, racism, and privilege in Grinnell, Iowa, and beyond.
-To build a coalition with multi-cultural groups to combat racism and privilege and to raise consciousness on campus.
Means:
-CARW will meet on a bi-weekly basis in a safe but challenging space to focus both on individual issues and campus-wide issues pertaining to racism and privilege.
-CARW will plan campus events including films, speakers, panels, open forums, which focus on the goals of educating, raising awareness, and creating meaningful dialogue about race, racism, and privilege.
-CARW members will work to educate themselves and those around them about racism and privilege that is often hidden to white people.
-CARW hopes to co-sponsor events and actions with other groups, departments or individuals with similar or related goals.
