Focus on Mediation Facilitated by Students

The Conflict Resolution Group was founded in November 2002 by Anik Gevers, Jill Lofchie and Byll Bryce who were also Grinnell's first team to participate in AMTA's Annual Mock Mediation Tournament.

Goals of the Conflict Resolution Group *Create an awareness of mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution on campus. *Train students and staff to be volunteer mediators. *Provide peer mediation session to the campus community. *Participate in the National Mock Mediation Tournament. *Share our services and resources with the greater Grinnell community. *Support ADR programs in the local schools.

What is Mediation?
Mediation is a peace-building process where a trained third party, a mediator, helps people resolve their conflicts by helping the parties find common common ground and reach a resolution. The mediator's role is to facilitate an honest, open conversation and assist the parties in reaching their own agreement. Many times parties obtain closure and thus being their own vital healing process.

Fundamental Tenets of Mediation
*The Mediator is neutral
*Session are confidential
*Voluntary process for all parties
*Open to creative solutions
*Gain a better understanding of the conflict
*Parties decide their settlement
*The Mediator is not the decision-maker or judge

When is Mediation Helpful?
Mediation is a flexible process that can be successfully used in various situations:
--inter-personal (roommate, faculty-student, intimate relationships)
--inter-group (work-place, industrial, religious, cliques)
--legal
--international

Why Mediation Works
Mediation has an extremely high success rate because...
...the process is voluntary, thus the parties arrive motivated to find a solution;
...the parties work together to create an agreement that satisfies the parties involved;
...it allows people to deal with emotions and conflicts in a healthy way.
