Offsetting Grinnell's energy with wind power would provide:

1. Significant positive environmental impacts
  • The Wind Feasibility Committee estimated the College's carbon dioxide and other pollutant emissions would be reduced by 14,000 tons per year
  • Future carbon emission regulations may levy taxes on traditional power producers who would in turn pass this cost to users. The College can greatly reduce those costs by producing a portion of its energy from a non-polluting source.
2. Energy security
  • Producing our own energy means the College is not relying on volatile commodity fuel prices that are subject to changes in the market. Energy produced via wind turbines remains at a stable, long-term price that is virtually unaffected by the fuel market.
3. Progress towards the strategic goal of decreasing consumption of electricity from the grid (Strategy 2.c.5)
4. Educational opportunities
5. Positive public relations
  • Wind turbines are a tangible example of Grinnell's commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
  • Few schools in the nation have similar renewable energy production capabilities.

Grinnell College is also a liberal arts institution with a commitment to proactive environmentalism, as outlined in our statement of environmental responsibility:
