New Golf Course Manager Named

Shane HartShane Hart, a longtime Grinnell resident and member of the Grinnell College Golf Course community, started his new position as general manager of the Grinnell College Golf Course on Friday, April 29.

Grinnell College purchased the Grinnell Golf and Country Club in March and opened the course for the season on April 1. Consistent with the College’s social values, the private course is now public, available for use by all — the College community, the broader Grinnell community and visitors to the area.

Hart, who has left his position as a real estate agent for Ramsey-Weeks Inc., has been involved with the former Grinnell Golf and Country Club for several years. He served as a board member since 2014 and was a past president. He stepped in as interim general manager during several vacancies dating to 2014.

As general manager, he coordinated, budgeted, and oversaw various golf events to ensure player enjoyment and profitability. He also gained knowledge of the course’s facilities, equipment, members, and events.

After a national search for golf course manager, Shane Hart emerged as our top choice for the position, says John Kalkbrenner, assistant vice president for auxiliary services and economic development at Grinnell College. Shane’s unique knowledge of the Grinnell community, Grinnell College, and the golf course, along with his tireless drive, compelled us to choose him.

He will bring immense experience and passion to the role of general manager, Kalkbrenner added, as someone who is both committed to the future of the College and the Grinnell College Golf Course.

I am excited to bring my experiences and energy together to help make the Grinnell College Golf Course a top-notch facility, Hart said. I look forward to welcoming back the past members, and reaching out to promote the facilities to the greater Poweshiek area. I couldn’t be more pleased or honored to have been chosen for this position.

Hart is an active member of the Grinnell community at-large, serving on the board of the Chamber of Commerce since 2015, as a volunteer coach for the youth golf and basketball programs since 2008. He has chaired the Iowa Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Open Golf Tournament since 2010. He also has directed many other tournaments and socials at the former country club.  

He enjoys various recreational activities, including racquetball, golf, basketball, football, and going on nature hikes.

Fundraising, Engagement Are Up

Donor Gifts at Highest Mark During Kington Presidency

Alumni, friends, parents, faculty, students, and foundation and corporation partners made philanthropic gifts totaling $11.2 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, the highest level in the past four years.

“Our momentum continues to grow, and as we position ourselves for even greater impact, we value the opportunity to turn to our benefactors as partners who can help ensure the future for Grinnell College,” says President Raynard S. Kington. “The entire Grinnell community is grateful for the many talents and gifts of all our alumni and friends.”

Highlights include:

  • More than 9,400 donors.
  • 157 alumni made their first ever gift to the College.
  • An additional 119 young alumni (classes of 2004­–2013) made their first gift since graduating.
  • Parent and family giving reached a four-year high.

Annual gifts of all ranges continued to play an important role in advancing the College’s priorities, with these highlights:

  • $5.8 million directed to the endowment, the most since fiscal year 1987.
  • $4.27 million in realized estate gifts, which were directed to a number of initiatives, some of which are included in the endowment figure noted above.
  • $2.2 million given as flexible, unrestricted support that can be directed to the College’s highest priorities.
  • Need-based financial aid support totaled $435,691, which represents a 24 percent increase over fiscal year 2013.

Donors also made new, multi-year pledges and future estate gifts. Grinnell received $1.2 million in commitments that will create seven new endowed scholarship funds. Additionally, commitments totaled $4.5 million for three endowed chairs, including a gift of $1.5 million to endow the Daniel ’77 and Patricia Jipp Finkelman ’80 deanship for Grinnell’s Center for Careers, Life, and Service.

 “All gifts are meaningful,” says Shane Jacobson, vice-president for development and alumni relations.  “Philanthropy is an important ingredient that helps showcase the excellence of our people and programs, and ensures the ongoing strength of this wonderful place.”

Power of Alumni Engagement

From meeting with old friends at Reunion to helping welcome prospective students to Grinnell, alumni proved over and over that they support the College in many meaningful ways. Let’s count a few:

  • Reunion 2014 was the single largest alumni gathering in College history.
    • Grinnell welcomed 1,454 alumni and guests to campus for a weekend of celebration, connection, and fellowship. Guests arrived from 49 states, Washington, D.C., and 20 foreign countries.
    • The 50th and 5th reunion groups set new records for overall classmate attendance.
    • The Class of ’64 surpassed its reunion giving goal by committing $1.33 million, the second most since Grinnell developed a reunion giving program.
  • 50 alumni mentors participated in the College’s student/alumni externship program in spring 2014. 76 percent were first-time participants and 97 percent indicated that they would recommend the program to other alumni.
  • The Grinnell Regional Admission Support Program (GRASP) was instrumental in assisting the admission office with its record-breaking application season in 2013–14.
    • Alumni volunteers conducted more than 550 applicant interviews, an increase of 50 percent from the previous year.
    • The number of alumni interviewing also increased dramatically, almost 40 percent more than the year prior.
  • Fall Volunteer Weekend set an attendance record and was up 31 percent over 2012.
  • Throughout the year, the College welcomed 4,444 alumni, parents, and friends to 88 regional and campus events, a 4 percent increase over 2013 and 100 percent increase from 2011.

Jacobson says, “Grinnellians clearly believe in creating impact. In all of the ways they engage with us, they signal the importance of a lifelong relationship. We are thankful to have a wonderful network of dedicated volunteers.”

New Vice-President

Shane Jacobson joins the College’s staff on June 2 as the new vice-president for development and alumni relations.

Jacobson comes to Grinnell from the University of Vermont Foundation, where he currently serves as vice president for development and campaign manager. Since his arrival at UVM, the 223-year-old institution has seen considerable growth in fundraising activity, setting an all-time record for total new gift commitments and receipts. Jacobson supervises a staff of 17, works with major and principal donors to the university and is the senior staff liaison to the board’s Governance Committee.

“Shane comes to Grinnell with strong, relevant experience in development and alumni leadership,” says President Raynard S. Kington. “He has demonstrated success in shaping a culture of philanthropy and in building a successful and motivated group of staff members. He also is a successful fundraiser. We are glad that he’s chosen to return to Iowa.”

A native of Webster City, Iowa, Jacobson earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s in educational leadership and policy studies, both from Iowa State University. He also has completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Management Development Program.

Jacobson worked in Iowa State’s admissions office before joining the university’s alumni relations staff, where he managed the national alumni clubs program and held positions of increasing responsibility, leading ultimately to his appointment as senior director of development.

Clint Korver ’89, chair of Grinnell’s Board of Trustees, notes, “We entrust to Shane a substantial element of our financial wellbeing. Grinnell provides a first-class education to the very best students without regard to their ability to pay. Only a small group of elite colleges share this enviable position — one made possible only by the generous support of our alumni and other stakeholders. Shane brings impressive skills and experience to this crucial role, as demonstrated by his successes at the University of Vermont. We look forward to similar successes at Grinnell.”

Jacobson says he is excited to join the development and alumni relations team at Grinnell.

Grinnell College VP Houston Dougharty Is Honored by National Professional Association

Grinnell, Iowa -- Houston Dougharty, vice president for student affairs at Grinnell College, was honored earlier this month at the regional meeting of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

The organization recognized Dougharty for Outstanding Performance as a Senior Student Affairs Officer, an honor that is presented to an individual who has excelled as a dean in the student affairs profession.

About Houston Dougharty

Houston Dougharty has been vice president of student affairs at Grinnell since spring 2008. Over the past 29 years—at Grinnell and in student affairs positions at other colleges and universities—he has led and served in most areas of college student affairs, including counseling and health services, substance abuse prevention, suicide and self-harming behaviors prevention, admissions, multicultural affairs and service learning.

Dougharty is active regionally and nationally in a number of professional organizations, and is frequently invited to speak at professional conferences. Currently an adjunct faculty member at Drake University in Des Moines, he previously taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Before coming to Grinnell, Dougharty held leadership positions in student affairs at Lewis & Clark College, the University of Puget Sound, Iowa State, Western Washington University, UCSB, and the University of Hartford. He is a native of Santa Fe, N.M.
