Ben Pope, '12 (pictured), a right-hander from Maryville, Tenn. (Alcoa HS), has been named Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Pope fired a complete-game four-hitter in a 4-0 victory over Illinois College Saturday, guaranteeing the Pioneers at least a tie of the Midwest Conference South Division. He fanned four batters as Grinnell moved to 8-0 in league play and 17-11 overall.
The Grinnell College baseball doubleheader at William Penn University in Oskaloosa on Wednesday has been postponed due to rain. The contests will now just be a single game, starting at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Grinnell College men’s tennis team is well-represented in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
As a team, the Pioneers are ranked 15th in the region. Washington University holds down the top spot.
Juan Carlos Perez ’11 (pictured) is ranked both in singles and doubles. He is eighth in the region in singles and 14th in doubles with Dmitriy Glumov ’12.
Grinnell College’s David Montgomery has been named the Midwest Conference Men’s Track Performer of the Week.
Montgomery, who is from Elmhurst, Ill. (York HS), had a stellar weekend at the Buena Vista Challenge in Storm Lake, Iowa, taking second in both the mile (4 minutes, 25 seconds) and 3000-meter run (8:49.23). Both are top times in the Midwest Conference this season.
The Women’s Track Performer of the Week is Emily Schudrowitz of St. Norbert College, while the Field Performer is Krystal Sterling of Carroll University.
The Grinnell College men’s tennis team will be looking for another highly-successful campaign in 2010.
The squad’s top returnee is Juan Carlos Perez ’11 (pictured), who qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament last year in singles play.
Grinnell College’s Matt Skelly ‘12 has been named the Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball Performer of the Week.
Skelly, a 6-4, 182-pound sophomore forward from Phoenix, Ariz. (St. Mary’s), played a big role in Grinnell’s weekend wins over Lawrence University and Carroll University. He tallied 20 points in a 90-89 victory over Lawrence and was a sizzling 9-of-16 from 3-point range and finished with 30 points in the Pioneers’ buzzer-beater win over Carroll. The win over Carroll was the Pioneers’ first in the last five tries, with the previous victory coming on Dec. 1, 2007.
The Wartburg College at Grinnell College baseball game scheduled for Wednesday, March 17, has been postponed due to wet grounds at North Diamond.
The contest will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader when the Pioneers play at Wartburg on April 11.
The 2009 Grinnell College Baseball season was one to remember. After winning 22 games (a single-season school record), earning a trip to the Midwest Conference Playoffs, and graduating six seniors that started a combined 358 games (30 from the mound), it doesn’t figure to get much better for the Pioneers.
Starting times have been changed for the Grinnell College and Knox College basketball games Feb. 18 in Galesburg, Ill.
The men's game has been switched to a 5:30 p.m. start, followed by the women at 7:30.
