Grinnell College's Henry Reich '09 has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country First Team. Reich was one of 15 athletes named to the elite team in the College Division. He is the third Pioneer athlete to earn Academic All-America honors for Track and Field/Cross Country, but the first to be voted to the First Team.
Grinnell College tennis player Dan LaFountaine '09 has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 At-Large First Team.By being named to the First Team, LaFountaine is in the running to be an NCAA Academic All-American. That team will be named next month.LaFountaine, from St. Cloud, Minn., is playing in the NCAA Division III National Tennis Tournament this weekend. He also qualified for the national event in singles play as a sophomore. LaFountaine owns 164 career wins between singles and doubles play, going 80-13 in singles and 84-15 in doubles.
Grinnell College softball players Brianna Gallo '11 (left) and Amanda Stromquist '12 (center) have been named to the All-Midwest Conference South Division First Team for the 2009 campaign.
Gallo, a second baseman from Grinnell, Iowa (Grinnell HS), led the Pioneers in batting average (.340), runs scored (20), hits (33) and stolen bases (11). Her stolen base figure ranked third in the Midwest Conference. Gallo was second on the team in on base percentage (.402) and total bases (34).
Grinnell College's Pete Kieselbach '10 (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.To be eligible for the honor, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 79.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Due to the standing water on the field and impending storms, the Grinnell College softball doubleheader with Monmouth College has been postponed on Sunday, April 26. The games will be made up in Grinnell on Tuesday, April 28, beginning at 3 p.m.
